-- portfolio about menu portfolio about the international style of muriel spark the international style of muriel spark at the national library of scotland celebrated the life and literary achievements of dame muriel spark and was part of the muriel spark 100 programme, marking the centenary of the iconic writers birth. the structure of the exhibition follows spark to 6 key locations throughout her lifetime. to effectively transport the visitor to each of the 6 thematic locations adapted the library’s existing exhibition system to create rooms sets designed in the relevant period style, using a combination of bespoke furniture and large format graphics. this room set concept was inspired by spark’s quote ‘a famous writer’s house is irresistible; i find sheer magic in the rooms’. st cecilia's hall the edinburgh university collection of historic musical instruments (euchmi) is internationally recognised as one of the finest collections of its type in the world. the euchmi was originally displayed in two separate locations: the reid concert hall museum of instruments and st cecilia’s hall museum of instruments. the st cecilia’s hall redevelopment project sought to integrate these two museums into one visitor destination, st cecilia’s hall museum, to reach out to new audiences, create a centre of excellence for research and scholarship and ensure the future of the historic st cecilia’s hall for generations to come, creating a ‘must see’ visitor attraction of five-star visitscotland rating. initially, were appointed to carry out a feasibility study to enable a phase 1 application to be submitted to hlf by the university of edinburgh. our task was to work with the university to develop an attractive interpretation proposal for phase 1 in support of the university’s application. the project sought to formulate a costed museum interior layout, re-display and re-interpretation masterplan, which fitted within the overarching redevelopment project. the feasibility study document was to be used as the basis of a major funding application to hlf and other potential funders for the re-display and re-interpretation of the historic musical instruments. proposals for an integrated museum were developed and discussed in detail with the principle stakeholders. the complicated format of the building, encompassing the grade a listed concert hall and offices and spread over two floors, presented a challenge to the design team. working in collaboration with a wider project team developed an effective scheme which optimised space, defining a way for visitors to move through the museum and experience the collection in a compelling and practical sequence. the hlf application was successful and the objectives of the university to create a more logical, illuminating and engaging visitor experience from a diverse collection and significant historic building was successfully achieved. you are here were awarded the tender to design the temporary exhibition at the national library of scotland ‘you are here’ which ran from july 2016 - march 2017. the nls map collection is an extraordinary world-class resource spanning over 700 years from medieval to digital maps. the design strategy which adopted for this exhibition was to maximize access to the map collection, by using innovative display solution in the form of a flexible re-useable exhibition system allowing the use of large scale graphic imagery and creative interactivity. this facilitated maximum public engagement with this valuable and unique collection. blackwell the arts & crafts story exhibition was designed and produced by and installed within the historic a listed house blackwell in the lake district. the exhibition story is told through examples of the finest objects from the period, including designs by the father of the movement william morris, his contemporary ca voysey and objects designed by blackwell’s architect, mh baillie scott. the display highlights the key people whose passion and enthusiasm for the individual handmade object made the arts & crafts a highly influential international design movement. visitors learn about the arts & crafts movement through craftsmanship, sense of place, design unity and nature, and get a deeper understanding of blackwell. the commission also covered the design and supply of exterior interpretive signage panels and interactive multimedia. the highlanders' museum the highlanders’ museum at fort george was opened by the duke of edinburgh in march 2013. the royal opening marked the end of an extensive redevelopment project to update and preserve a historically significant building within the largest historic military fort in europe. the project had many complexities due to fort george being both a listed building and a scheduled monument. the museum itself, which is located over three floors required extensive modernisation to meet visitor and collection requirements. led a large design team on this project, which included conservation architecture, engineering, curation, collection conservation, audio visual and multimedia interactivity. plague! this winter 2015 exhibition at the national library of scotland on george vi bridge in edinburgh explored the major contagious diseases that afflicted scotland until the establishment of the nhs. the display showcased the library’s diverse collections of printed books, pamphlets, manuscripts and maps. designed an evocative and immersive exhibition which resembled the 17th century closes of edinburgh’s old town. cases were concealed behind wood doors with carved out crosses (painted crosses were marked on doors during the plague outbreaks to mark an infected property) and soundscapes alongside moody lighting were used to create an unsettling environment for the visitors. the john buchan story were appointed to produce ‘the john buchan story’, exploring buchan’s life and legacy, showing the variety and scale of his personal experience and literary output, beyond “the thirty nine steps”. the museum also portrays his family’s broader associations with peebles and illustrates some of their achievements. his parents had grown up in tweeddale and family holidays were spent with relatives in the area, so buchan developed a passion for the borders countryside and its people. sound body, sound mind the university of edinburgh has been one of the leading centres for the study of medicine since the 1700s. sound body, sound mind used the university collections to explore the struggle of understanding and treating illness through the centuries, focusing on the fascinating and challenging relationship between the body and mind. displayed in the university’s main library exhibition space, used fabric graphic banners to showcase images from the various books, manuscripts and objects on display. these banners were suspended using curved rails to form pathways through the exhibition, creating an immersive experience. fossil hunters were appointed to provide interpretation development of existing content work and the management of all 2d and 3d design-related activity and production for the nms exhibition fossil hunters: unearthing the mystery of life on earth. this natural sciences exhibit told the story of the transition of vertebrate life in water to life on land approximately 360–340 million years ago, showcasing new nms collections and the unique position of scotland providing insight into this pivotal event. the exhibition opened at nms on 19 february 2016. were also responsible for the management of av and interactives production and the exhibition build, including the tender processes. godfrey thomson professor sir godfrey hilton thomson (1881–1955) was a giant in educational research. he had leading roles in the scottish mental surveys of 1932 and 1947, which tested the intelligence of almost every 11-year-old scottish school pupil born in 1921 or 1936. this temporary exhibition at the university of edinburgh’s main library showcased thom
